How to Protect Your Child from Demonic Night Terrors: A Parent's Guide to Spiritual Authority
When You're Standing Over the Bed and You Feel Completely Helpless
There is nothing that will humble a parent faster than standing in a dark room at two in the morning while your child screams at something you cannot see.
You flip on the light. You check the closet. You tell them it was just a dream. And some nights, that is exactly what it was. But some nights, you know better. You feel it too — that thickness in the room, that cold spot by the bed, that sense that your child isn't screaming at nothing.
I know that helplessness personally, from the other side of the bed. When I was a kid, I woke up paralyzed and saw entities in my room. My grandfather — I called him Dedad — did the best he could. He'd come in and pretend to "slay the monsters" for me, swinging at the dark like a knight in a bedtime story. It calmed me down. I loved him for it. But it didn't solve the actual spiritual reality, because none of us knew how to take authority in the Name of Jesus. Nobody in my family understood we were dealing with a real spiritual enemy, not just an overactive imagination.
If that's you right now — desperate, exhausted, and out of natural answers — I want to walk you through what I wish someone had walked my family through.
Your Child Is Not Imagining This
Here's something a lot of parents don't want to hear: children are often more spiritually sensitive than adults, not less. Their minds haven't been trained by the world to filter out everything supernatural yet. We grow up and get "reasonable." Kids haven't gotten there. So they see and sense things a lot of adults have simply trained themselves to ignore.
Jesus took this seriously. He didn't roll His eyes at the idea of little ones being vulnerable to spiritual harm:
"But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." — Matthew 18:6 (KJV)
That's not a throwaway line. Jesus is telling us, in the strongest language He uses anywhere in the Gospels, that the spiritual protection of children matters to Him. If it matters to Jesus, it needs to matter to us — and it means He's given us real authority to act on their behalf.
Step 1: Seek God About the Legal Right — Don't Guess
Here's where I have to push back on how a lot of deliverance teaching gets applied at the family level. Too many parents skip straight to "cleanse the house" and start guessing at what the problem might be, without ever actually seeking God about what opened the door in the first place.
A demon doesn't get to just show up in your child's room for no reason. Something gave it legal right to be there. And that "something" is not always obvious, and it's not always something the child did — or even something you did.
In my own family, before I was even born, my mom and dad went to psychics and sat in on seances. I didn't do that. My parents did. But that was a real, documented open door into our bloodline, and it produced fruit generations later — including what I went through as a small child. Scripture warns about exactly this kind of thing:
"Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God." — Leviticus 19:31 (KJV)
If your parents, grandparents, or you yourself have ever consulted a psychic, medium, Ouija board, tarot cards, horoscopes, or any other "familiar spirit" practice, don't assume that has nothing to do with what your child is experiencing tonight. Generational sin and generational open doors are real, and they don't announce themselves.
So before you do anything else, get before the Lord and ask Him directly: "God, show me the legal right. Show me the open door." Then go to the Word and let the Holy Spirit search you:
"Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." — Psalm 139:23-24 (KJV)
This is not a guessing game, and it's not something you can Google your way through. You cannot skip this step and expect lasting freedom. Ask the Holy Spirit specifically. Fast if you need to. Read your Bible with this question in mind, not just for general encouragement. Write down what He shows you — a practice in your home right now, a habit in your marriage, a door that was opened in your own childhood, or something that happened in your family line before you were ever born.
Step 2: Cleanse the Home — Close the Gates
Once God starts showing you what the open door actually is, you have to look honestly at what you've allowed into your house. This isn't about guessing anymore, and it isn't about becoming paranoid over every toy on the shelf. It's about obedience to what He just revealed.
Ask yourself:
- What movies, shows, books, toys, or music does my child consume that traffic in fear, darkness, or the occult, even in a "kid-friendly" package?
- What's the spiritual atmosphere of our home — is it marked by peace, or by arguing, anger, and fear?
God wasn't vague about this in the Old Testament:
"Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing." — Deuteronomy 7:26 (KJV)
I know that verse sounds intense for a conversation about stuffed animals and cartoons. But the principle holds: what you bring into your house, you're inviting to live there. Walk through your child's room. Walk through your own house. If the Holy Spirit puts His finger on something, don't argue with Him. Remove it.
Step 3: Establish Your Spiritual Shield Over the Home
This is the step most parents skip, because nobody ever taught them they had the authority to take it.
You don't need a title, a pulpit, or a special anointing to pray over your own household. As the parent, you carry legal and spiritual authority in that home. Go into your child's room — while they're awake, so it isn't scary, or quietly while they sleep — lay your hand on the bed, and verbally command any unclean spirit to leave in the Name of Jesus.
Say it out loud. Demons don't respond to thoughts; they respond to spoken, Spirit-backed authority. A submitted believer standing on the Word of God and the finished work of Jesus doesn't have to negotiate with darkness. It has to leave.
Step 4: Teach Your Child to Call Upon the Name of Jesus
Here's where a lot of well-meaning parents stop short. They fight the battle for their kids every single night, but they never teach the kids that they can fight too.
Don't just be their Dedad, swinging at monsters in the dark. Teach them the truth behind the comfort.
I wish someone had told me at age five that I didn't need my grandfather to fight the demons for me. I wish they had taught me to speak the Name of Jesus myself. Even a child's whisper in the Name of Jesus makes hell tremble. You're not just protecting your child when you teach them this — you're equipping them for the rest of their life.
Teach them a simple, real prayer they can say themselves: "In the Name of Jesus, I command you to leave. Jesus is Lord over this room and over me." Let them practice saying it with confidence, not in fear. Confidence is the key — they need to know they aren't begging, they're commanding, because Jesus has already won.
Action Items: What to Do Tonight
- Seek God directly for the legal right. Ask the Holy Spirit specifically to show you the open door, and search Scripture with that question in mind — don't guess.
- Look at your family line, not just your child's room. Ask whether you, your spouse, or a previous generation ever consulted psychics, mediums, Ouija boards, tarot, horoscopes, or other occult practices.
- Walk through your home and your child's room. Once God shows you what's open, remove anything tied to it — media, toys, books, or objects.
- Examine the atmosphere of your household. Deal with unresolved anger, strife, or fear between family members; those things create an opening too.
- Physically go into the room and pray out loud. Lay a hand on the bed and command any unclean spirit to leave in the Name of Jesus.
- Teach your child a simple, spoken prayer they can use themselves, and practice it with them in the daylight so it isn't unfamiliar at night.
- Cover the home in ongoing prayer, not just a one-time event. Deliverance closes a door; a consistent walk with Jesus keeps it closed.
- Get mature help if you need it. If the attacks are severe or ongoing, don't be too proud to ask a pastor or mature believer to pray with you.
Final Challenge
Are your children struggling with night terrors? Have you prayed over their rooms yet? Tell me your story in the comments.
And if you want the fuller story of how I learned all of this the hard way, it's in my books, Open Your Eyes: My Supernatural Journey and Overcoming Night Terror: Making the Demons Leave. Overcoming Night Terror especially walks through what opens the door to these attacks and how to close it for good — in your own life, and in your children's.
