Reading the Bible Without Man-Made Lenses

Image
Are you reading the Bible, or are you only reading what somebody taught you to see in the Bible? When I had my radical encounter with Jesus in 1995, I was given a new heart and a hunger for the Word of God. I heard the phrase, “Read the instructions.” So I began reading the Bible voraciously. I knew the keys to the Kingdom were in there somewhere. After a while, I became impatient with my progress. I started leaning heavily on books written by famous authors and people with impressive letters after their names. I even read the Left Behind series. Books were not the problem by themselves. The problem was that I allowed other people’s conclusions to become a lens that overruled the plain text of Scripture. When I found a passage that appeared to contradict a respected theologian, I assumed the theologian must be right and I simply did not understand the Bible. That is a dangerous habit. A teacher may help us see something we missed, but no teacher has the authority to correct God. R...

Preaching is a Public Heralding of the Gospel

Image
Are We Preaching the Gospel or Hiding It? There is a painful question the church needs to ask itself: if the lost never walk into our building, will they ever hear the gospel from us? We can have excellent worship, sound teaching, comfortable chairs, polished websites, and a full calendar. None of those things are wrong. But if our Christianity never leaves the building, something has gone seriously wrong. Jesus did not tell His disciples to make the barn more attractive and hope the harvest walked in. He told them to go into the fields. Too many believers have reduced preaching the gospel to something a preacher does from a pulpit to people who are already saved. Teaching the saints is biblical. We need it. But biblical preaching is also a public announcement of the King and His kingdom. It is a call for people to repent, believe, and enter into a real spiritual relationship with the biblical Jesus. The lost are not likely to wander into a church building any more than crim...
