Heavy Metal Deliverance: Leaving Darkness Behind and Walking With Jesus

Jesus Brings Real Freedom

I was a worship leader at the time, but I was still listening to heavy metal. I loved the music, defended it, and argued for it from a carnal point of view. I did not realize how much it was affecting the spiritual atmosphere of my life. I was trying to worship Jesus while still feeding my spirit with darkness.

Then the Lord began dealing with me through some of my friends. They told me I couldn’t lead worship and listen to heavy metal. I fought with them for a bit, but something deep down in my spirit told me they were right. So, like the believers in Acts 19:19 who burned their curious arts, I took my heavy metal CDs and books and burned them. I did not merely throw them away. I made a clean break.

As the CDs and books burned, something supernatural happened. I saw what looked like demonic bats or black fowl coming out of the fire. They flew around in swirls as if they did not know where to go. I felt a whirlwind in the spirit. I began swirling in the same circular motion as those demonic birds. I became dizzy, almost to the point of falling. These black bat-like or crow-like spirits were flying all over the place as the fire consumed all of my heavy metal CDs.

When it was over, I felt as if a tremendous weight had lifted off me. I literally felt as if I lost 50 pounds. I seriously felt much lighter. My mind became much clearer. The heaviness that had been pressing in on my mind had lifted. The tormenting thoughts that had plagued me stopped. Jesus did not merely improve my mood. He brought real freedom.

The Fowls of the Air Steal the Word

Jesus explained the parable of the sower this way:

Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. — Luke 8:12 KJV

In Mark’s account, Jesus says:

And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. — Mark 4:15 KJV

That is what I believe was happening in my life. The fowls of the air come to steal the Word sown in our hearts. Heavy metal was not just entertainment for me. It was stealing the Word. I was trying to receive truth, worship, and walk with Jesus, but I had left a door open that kept feeding darkness and choking out the seed of the Word.

This is why discernment matters. Music is not spiritually neutral when it continually pulls the heart toward rebellion, lust, rage, fear, occult fascination, or death. I had to admit that what I was defending was actually working against the very Word I was trying to live.

Repentance Includes Turning Away

Repentance is not a casual word. It means turning from what has bound us and turning to Jesus. Acts 19:19 describes new believers who publicly destroyed occult materials connected to their former lives. They did not keep a souvenir of bondage. They made a clean break.

That day at the fire was not a religious performance. It was obedience. I had to stop making excuses for compromise. I had to stop saying, “It is only music,” when the fruit in my life told a different story.

We must be honest about the doors we leave open. If music, media, objects, practices, or relationships repeatedly pull us toward darkness, fear, lust, anger, rebellion, or spiritual oppression, we should bring them before Jesus. Do not justify what the Holy Spirit is asking you to release.

Freedom Is Found in Relationship With Jesus

Deliverance is not about becoming fascinated with demons. It is about becoming devoted to Jesus. The point of the testimony is not the bats, the fire, or the manifestation. The point is that Jesus has authority over darkness.

After deliverance, the space must be filled with the Word, prayer, worship, fellowship, and obedience. The goal is not merely an empty house. The goal is a life occupied by the Holy Spirit.

Some battles involve deep wounds and may require mature pastoral care, prayer, and wise support. There is no shame in asking for help. But never forget that Jesus is Lord, and His name is above every other name.

Do Not Return to the Old Life

Freedom must be guarded. Remove what you know draws you backward. Replace it with what builds faith. This is not legalism; it is wisdom. We do not throw off chains only to pick them up again because they feel familiar.

When temptation comes, speak the Word. Call a trusted believer. Worship Jesus. Remember what He delivered you from. Your testimony can become a warning to others and a declaration of the power of God.

Action Items: Walk Out Your Freedom

  1. Ask Jesus to search your life. Invite the Holy Spirit to show you anything that keeps a door open to bondage.
  2. Repent specifically. Name what you are turning from and surrender it to Jesus.
  3. Remove the compromise. Get rid of media, objects, or practices God clearly tells you to leave behind.
  4. Fill the space with truth. Read Scripture, worship, and pray daily so the Word remains rooted in your heart.
  5. Guard the seed of the Word. Do not let the fowls of the air steal what God is sowing in you.
  6. Seek mature help when needed. Ask trusted, biblically grounded believers to pray and walk with you.

The Final Challenge

Jesus did not save you so that you could live half-free. If the Holy Spirit is putting His finger on something, do not argue with Him. The thing you defend may be the very thing stealing the Word from your heart.

Do not return to darkness. Turn fully toward Jesus
