  Jesus Brings Real Freedom I was a worship leader at the time, but I was still listening to heavy metal. I loved the music, defended it, and argued for it from a carnal point of view. I did not realize how much it was affecting the spiritual atmosphere of my life. I was trying to worship Jesus while still feeding my spirit with darkness. Boaz and the Tablet As I was seeking the Lord one morning, Boaz came up to my tablet and watched with curiosity as I spoke notes into it. He looked at the screen, watched me talk, and seemed genuinely interested in what was happening. From his point of view, that little tablet probably looked like some kind of miracle. I began to wonder how much he understood. He knows some words. He knows his name. He knows "no," and he probably has a pretty good sense of when he is being called a good boy.   Where Does Confession Fit in Prayer? A lot of us want to begin prayer with confession and repentance. I understand that. When we come before the Lord, we are aware of our sin, our weakness, our wandering thoughts, and the many ways we fall short. We think about 1 John 1:8-10, where Scripture tells us that if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us. That is a powerful promise. We should not ignore confession. We should not pretend sin is no big deal. Repentance is part of walking with Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is faithful to convict us when we need to turn from something and get back in step with the Lord. But when Jesus gave us the model prayer, He did something that should make us pause. He did not begin with our sin. He began with the Father. It is important to seek the Lord first in the morning and let Him establish our thoughts (Proverbs 16:3). This is one way I think about Matthew 6:33. We are putting the Lord first chronologically. In doing so, we learn about what is tugging on the reins of our hearts. Think about this, whatever we focus on first in the morning is what our heart thinks is a priority. Jesus searches and tries the reins of our hearts (Jeremiah 17:10, Rev 2:23). What we gravitate to first show us what is tugging at our heartstrings. We can learn a lot from Solomon. He put the Lord first. He didn't ask for wealth or power. He asked for wisdom to judge God's people. God was so pleased that He gave him wealth and honor in addition to wisdom.
