Open Your Mouth and God Will Fill It: Stepping into Spontaneous Spiritual Authority

It was 2014, and I was in Lampasas, Texas. If you've ever been out that way, you know there’s a certain kind of quiet that settles over the land at night. I was sitting at the foot of my bed, just being still, seeking that spiritual relationship with the biblical Jesus that I’m always talking about on ConradRocks.net. I wasn't looking for a "word" or trying to manufacture some spiritual experience. I was just there. And then, in that stillness, I heard it. It wasn’t an audible voice that would wake the neighbors, but it was crystal clear in my spirit: "Open your mouth, and I will fill it."

That phrase hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew it was scripture, but I didn't fully grasp the weight of it at that moment. Have you ever felt like you’re standing on the edge of a divine appointment, but your throat tightens up? You see someone at the grocery store—maybe they're lingering a little too long in the produce aisle, looking discouraged—and you feel that nudge. But then the carnal mind starts its gymnastics. "What will I say? I’ll look stupid. I don't have a 'word' for them." We get so caught up in our own lack of preparation that we miss the miracle.

The pain point for many of us is the fear of the unknown and the reliance on our own intellect. We think we have to be polished theologians or have a three-point sermon ready before we can minister. We’re agitated by the silence because we think the silence means God isn't there. But the solution isn't more study—though I’m a firm believer in hiding the Word in your heart—the solution is a radical, terrifying trust in the Holy Spirit. I want to share with you how God can blow your mind when you stop premeditating and start participating in what He is doing in the moment.

When I heard those words in Lampasas, I dug into my Bible to find the source. It’s right there in Psalm 81:10: I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. (Psalm 81:10 KJV). Now, some people think this just means God is going to provide your daily bread. And sure, He does that. He’s the Jehovah Jireh who sustains us. But as I meditated on this, I realized it’s about so much more than physical food. It’s about the Oracles of God.

I remember a time when I was the only Christian in a room full of atheists. The air was thick with skepticism and the smell of stale coffee. They were mocking the faith, tossing around "if-then" conjectures and carnal reasoning like they were playing a game of catch. I felt like a small boat in a very stormy sea. My natural instinct was to start formulating an intellectual defense. I wanted to pull from my mental files of apologetics. But then, the anointing hit.

It was like a physical weight in the room. I opened my mouth, and words started coming out that I hadn't prepared. I wasn't even sure where the sentence was going until it left my lips. And the most amazing thing happened: they stopped talking. These were people who lived to argue, and suddenly, their mouths were stopped. It wasn't because I was brilliant; it was because the Holy Spirit was wielding the sword.

This is exactly what Jesus was talking about in the Gospel of Mark. He told His disciples: But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. (Mark 13:11 KJV). Think about the pressure of that moment! He’s talking about being hauled before judges and kings—situations where your very life is on the line. And He says, "Don't think about it."

That goes against everything our "itchy ears" doctrines teach us today. We want to be prepared. We want to "I can do all things" our way through life. But the spiritual relationship with the biblical Jesus calls us to a higher code of conduct. It’s about being "instant in season and out of season."

I had three friends recently, all in different parts of the world, and they were all going through the fire at the exact same time. One was in a desert season, another in a dark valley. I was in the shower, not thinking about much of anything, when a word for them just dropped into my spirit. I had to make a choice: do I keep this to myself and wait until I can "verify" it, or do I open my mouth?

I delivered those words. It turns out they were exactly what those friends needed to hear. When you're in the middle of a trial, your carnal mind is screaming so loud that you often can't hear God for yourself. Sometimes God uses someone else to open their mouth and say what you cannot hear for yourself. This is a "use it or lose it" principle. If God gives you a word and you sit on it because you’re afraid of looking stupid, He’ll eventually find someone else who is willing to be a fool for Christ. I talk about this kind of spiritual sensitivity in my book, OPEN YOUR EYES MY SUPERNATURAL JOURNEY. We have to be willing to step out.

Consider the hierarchy of values. If your house is on fire, you don't sit outside and meditate on what you're going to save. You run in and grab what you value most. A trial by fire reveals who the Lord of your life really is. If you value your reputation more than the leading of the Spirit, you'll stay quiet. But if you value the souls of people and the glory of God, you'll open your mouth even when your hands are shaking.

Personal Reflections

I’ll be the first to admit that I haven't always gotten this right. There have been plenty of times I felt that "highlight" from the Holy Spirit—like a mouse pointer hovering over someone in the Walmart produce aisle—and I walked away. I let the "if" of the devil talk me out of it. "If you say that, they'll think you're crazy." "If you're wrong, you'll ruin your witness."

The devil loves to work in the rationale. He used it on Jesus in the wilderness: "If thou be the Son of God..." (Matthew 4:3 KJV). But Jesus didn't engage in a debate. He used the sword of the Spirit. He said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4 KJV).

What I’ve learned is that the "feeling" of being anointed isn't always there when you start. Sometimes, you just have to start talking about the weather or something mundane. I call it "establishing rapport," a habit from my old business days. But as you're talking, that's when the "fill" happens. It’s a knee-jerk examination of your faith. Are you willing to look stupid for Jesus?

I remember Peter at the gate of the temple called Beautiful. He looked at that lame man and said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. (Acts 3:6 KJV). Peter perceived something invisible—faith. He didn't have a plan when he walked up to that gate. He just opened his mouth, and God took over. If Peter hadn't spoken, that man might still be sitting there. Divine appointments don't happen while you're sitting on the couch.

Biblical References

The Bible is full of people who had to open their mouths before the miracle happened. Think of Jeremiah. He was afraid because he was just a youth. But the Lord told him: Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. (Jeremiah 1:8-9 KJV).

God didn't give Jeremiah a manuscript. He gave him His presence and His words. Jeremiah was then set over nations to root out, pull down, and build up. All of that authority started with a touch on the mouth and a willingness to speak.

Then there’s Ezekiel in the valley of dry bones. God asked him if the bones could live, and then told him to prophesy to them. Can you imagine how Ezekiel felt? Talking to a pile of sun-bleached bones? But he opened his mouth, he prophesied as he was commanded, and there was a noise, a shaking, and the bones came together.

Even Stephen, as he was being martyred, experienced this. He was in front of the religious rulers—the elite who held his life in their hands. He didn't give a premeditated legal defense. He gave a long, inspired discourse on the history of Israel and their resistance to the Holy Ghost. The Bible says they couldn't resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke. He was full of the Holy Ghost, looked up into heaven, and saw the glory of God.

And we can't forget the power of cleansing our atmosphere so we can hear clearly. In my book Overcoming Night Terror: Making the Demons Leave, I talk about how our environment affects our spiritual hearing. In Acts 19, the new believers burned their occult books—fifty thousand pieces of silver worth! The result? So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. (Acts 19:20 KJV). When we get the "accursed things" out of our lives, as warned in Deuteronomy 7:26, our spiritual ears open, and our mouths are ready to be filled.

Key Takeaways

  • Trust the Timing: The "fill" often happens "in that hour," not days in advance.
  • Overcome the Intellect: Don't let carnal reasoning or the "if-then" conjectures of the devil keep you silent.
  • Establish Rapport: Sometimes you just need to start the conversation with something simple to let the Spirit move.
  • Use It or Lose It: Prophetic words and words of knowledge are meant to be shared, not hoarded.
  • Atmosphere Matters: Clean your house of "devoted things" to ensure you are hearing the Spirit clearly.

Conclusion and Call to Action

God is calling us to a deeper level of boldness. He’s calling us to stop leaning on our own understanding and start leaning on the Holy Ghost. Whether you’re standing before a "judge" in your life—be it a literal courtroom, a boss, or just a skeptical neighbor—the promise remains: open your mouth wide, and He will fill it.

This is about more than just talking; it’s about the supernatural life. It’s about being part of the miracles that God wants to perform on the earth today. But those miracles are waiting on the other side of your "yes." They are waiting for you to be willing to look stupid for the sake of the Gospel.

Action Items

  • Identify One "Nudge": This week, pay attention to that "highlight" in your spirit. When you feel a nudge to speak to someone, don't wait for a script. Just say "Hello" and see where the Spirit leads.
  • Audit Your Atmosphere: Take a look around your home. Are there "accursed things"—media, books, or objects that don't glorify God—that might be clogging your spiritual ears? Be bold enough to get rid of them.
  • Meditate to Fill the Well: While we don't premeditate our words for specific moments, we do hide the Word in our hearts. Spend 15 minutes a day reading the KJV Bible to give the Spirit "sword material" to work with.
  • Pray for Boldness: Ask the Holy Spirit specifically for the courage to "look stupid" for Jesus this week.
  • Share the Blessing: If God gives you a word for a friend or family member, deliver it within 24 hours. Don't let the "use it or lose it" principle work against you.
